Make America Godly Again

Make America Godly Again: A Call to Return to Our Christian Foundation

Today marks a significant moment in American history as our nation observes "Rededicate 250" - a day declared to prepare for America's 250th anniversary of independence. This historic gathering on the National Mall brings together Americans from every background to pray, give testimony, and rededicate our country as one nation under God.

What Made America Great in the First Place?

When we talk about making America great again, we must first understand what made America great to begin with. It wasn't our harbors, rivers, or natural resources. It wasn't our economy, military, or even our constitution.

French writer Alexis de Tocqueville discovered this truth in 1831 when he came searching for America's greatness. After examining all our material advantages, he concluded: "Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good. And if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."

The Foundation of Christian Principles

Our founding fathers weren't religionists, atheists, or humanists - they were Christians who followed the God of the Bible. Patrick Henry, an original member of the Continental Congress, declared: "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often. This great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians. Not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ."

This Christian foundation allowed people of other faiths to find asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here. But it was never intended that other religions would become the driving forces of our nation.

Why America Needs God More Than Ever

The Poison in Our National Porridge

Like the poisoned porridge in Elisha's time, there's poison in America's spiritual food. Wokeness and secular ideologies have infiltrated our national discourse, threatening to uproot the very principles that made us great.

We face challenges today that are greater than those our founding fathers faced 250 years ago. We've enjoyed God's blessings for so long that we think we can succeed on our own. But Benjamin Franklin's words to the Continental Congress ring true today: "God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?"

The Biblical Foundation for National Blessing

"'Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his own inheritance.'" - Psalm 33:12 (ESV)
This verse doesn't say blessed is the nation that has "a god" - many nations have gods. It specifically refers to the Lord (Yahweh), the God of the Bible. When a nation acknowledges and follows the true God, blessing follows.

How Can We Make America Godly Again?

The Call to Repent, Return, and Rededicate

The path forward requires three essential steps:

Repent: We must acknowledge our departure from God's ways and turn from our wicked paths.

"'Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.'"
- Isaiah 55:6-7 (ESV)

Return: We must come back to God with humble hearts, recognizing our need for His guidance and blessing.

Rededicate: We must commit ourselves anew to following God's principles in our personal lives, families, and nation.

The Condition for National Healing

The most important word in 2 Chronicles 7:14 is "if" - it's the condition upon which everything else depends:

"'If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.'" - 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV)

Notice this promise isn't directed at the government, the president, or secular institutions. It's directed at God's people - Christians who must take responsibility for leading the way back to righteousness.

Our Role as Kingdom Ambassadors

The Church as God's Embassy

The local church serves as God's kingdom embassy in our community. We're not here to represent our community to God, but to represent God to our community. We study His Word to understand His ways, then carry His righteous standards into a world that desperately needs light.

Our Civic Responsibility

As Christians, we have a responsibility to participate in our government. We are "we the people" - the government derives its power from us. We must vote for God-fearing leaders who fear God more than polls or public opinion.

This isn't about partisan politics - it's about supporting leaders who will govern according to biblical principles and moral standards.

The Promise of Restoration

God's Abundant Mercy

Despite our failures as a nation, God offers abundant mercy to those who return to Him. He promises not just to pardon, but to "abundantly pardon" those who seek His face with humble hearts.

Healing for Our Broken Land

Our educational system is broken. Our families are fractured. Our hearts are wounded. But God promises to "heal our land" when His people meet the conditions of repentance and return.

Only God can restore what sin has destroyed. Only He can heal the deep divisions and moral confusion that plague our society.

Life Application

This week, commit to being part of America's spiritual restoration by taking these practical steps:
  1. Examine your own heart: What is God convicting you about? Where have you compromised His standards in your personal life?
  2. Increase your prayer life: Begin praying daily for our nation's leaders and for spiritual awakening in America.
  3. Study God's Word: Commit to reading your Bible regularly to understand God's ways and principles.
  4. Get involved civically: Register to vote if you haven't already, and research candidates' positions on moral and biblical issues.
  5. Influence your sphere: Share God's truth with your family, friends, and community through your words and actions
Questions for Reflection:
  • Am I seeking God's hand (His blessings) more than His face (His presence and will)?
  • What "wicked ways" do I need to turn from in my personal life?
  • How can I better represent God's kingdom in my daily interactions?
  • Am I taking my civic responsibilities seriously as a Christian citizen?

America's future depends not on political parties or government programs, but on whether God's people will humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. The promise is clear: if we do our part, God will hear from heaven, forgive our sins, and heal our land. The choice is ours.
