Coming to God Like a Child: Faith, Obedience, and Returning to the Father
There is something powerful about the simplicity of a child's faith. No overthinking, no shame spirals, no pulling away. Just trust. Jesus made it clear that this kind of faith is not just admirable. It is required. If you have ever found yourself drifting from God after a mistake, or wondering why you keep backing away right when things start to get good, this message is for you
What Did Jesus Mean When He Said to Become Like a Little Child?
In Matthew 18, the disciples came to Jesus with a very human question. They wanted to know who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Jesus responded in a way nobody expected.
"Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 18:3-4 English Standard Version (ESV)
He did not point to the most educated. He did not point to the most experienced. He called a little child over and said, this is the model.
Little children have a specific kind of faith. When a toddler reaches up with both arms, there is zero doubt in their mind that they are going to be picked up. When they scrape their knee, they run straight to mom or dad without hesitation. They do not wonder if they are worthy of being comforted. They just come.

Why Do We Pull Away from God When We Mess Up?
Here is where a lot of believers get stuck. When we sin, or even when we just feel like we have not been doing enough spiritually, the natural response is to pull back from God. We stop praying as much. We avoid reading the Bible. We tell ourselves that God is disappointed in us, so we give Him space.
But that is not how a child thinks. A child who gets in trouble does not go live in the woods. They take their punishment and then come right back to the parent who loves them.
We do the opposite. We bring shame on ourselves, become our own worst enemy, and create distance that God never asked for. He is not the one pushing us away. We are the ones stepping back.

The Story of the Prodigal Son Shows Us How God Really Responds
The parable of the prodigal son is one of the clearest pictures of how the Father responds when we come back to Him. The son took his inheritance, wasted it, and ended up so desperate that he was feeding pigs. For a Jewish person in that culture, that was about as low as it gets. Pigs were considered unclean animals, and being around them was deeply shameful.
But when he came to his senses and headed home, his Father did not wait at the door with a lecture. He ran toward him. He called for a robe, shoes, and a ring. He threw a celebration. He was not sitting at home fuming. He was watching and waiting, hoping his son would return.
That is the heart of God toward us. He is not keeping score. He is not waiting to say, "I told you so." He wants us back.

How Our View of Our Earthly Father Can Affect How We See God
For many people, the idea of a loving heavenly Father is hard to grasp because their experience with their earthly Father was complicated or painful. When you grow up with a Father who was absent, harsh, or inconsistent, hearing that God is your Father can feel distant and abstract.
But God is a different kind of Father. He is perfect. He knows your weaknesses and your strengths. He knows the number of hairs on your head. He does not discipline out of anger. He disciplines because He is working something good into you, and He always welcomes you back after.

What Is the "Two Dogs" Principle and Why Does It Matter?
There is a simple but important truth about the Christian life. Inside every believer, there is a constant tension between the flesh and the Spirit. Whichever one you feed more is going to be the stronger one.
Feed the flesh, and it grows. Feed the Spirit, and it grows. Every single day is a choice about which one gets your attention, your time, and your energy.
The flesh leads to death. The Spirit leads to life. Paul wrote about this tension clearly, and it is something every honest believer recognizes in their own experience.

What Happens When We Stop Growing in Our Faith?
There is a real danger in settling. When we pull back from God, even if we are not running into outright sin, the refining process stops. Think about how silver is purified. When raw silver is melted down, all kinds of impurities rise to the surface. They get scraped away. The more times it goes through the fire, the purer it becomes. Eventually, the impurities are so small they are barely visible.
That is what God does in our lives. But we have to let Him. When we pull back, when we stop pressing in, the refining stops. We get stuck at whatever level of maturity we were at when we backed away.
And here is the danger in being stuck. When you are not moving toward God, you become vulnerable to being pulled back toward the flesh. The enemy does not always need to drag someone into full-blown sin. If he can just get you comfortable on the fence, he is satisfied. He will let you keep going to church. He will let you keep reading your Bible occasionally. What bothers him is when you get serious with God. That is when he starts to lose.

What Does It Look Like to Keep Swimming Toward God?
There is a picture that captures this well. Imagine swimming across a lake. You get to the very middle, and you look back. You can see everything familiar behind you. Family, comfort, the known. You look ahead and see where you are going, but it feels far and a little lonely.
At that point, you have a choice. And here is the thing: you have just as far to swim back as you do to keep going forward. Many of us turn around and swim all the way back, only to end up in the same place we started. Not necessarily a bad place, but not further along with God either.
Walking closely with God can feel lonely at times. The closer you get to Him, the more the light in you exposes the darkness around you, and some people will pull away from that. But that discomfort is not a sign to retreat. It is a sign that something real is happening

How Do We Come Back to God After We Have Drifted?
The answer is simpler than we make it. You come back the same way a child comes back after getting in trouble. You just come back. You do not wait until you feel worthy. You do not clean yourself up first. You run back to the Father who is already watching for you.
There is a difference between stumbling and choosing to stay in sin. If you are in a pattern of deliberate, ongoing sin that you have no intention of giving up, that is something to take seriously before God. That kind of idol in your life will keep you from growing and will cause real damage.
But for the person who messed up, who feels ashamed, who has been avoiding God because they do not feel good enough right now, the answer is to stop waiting and just come back. He is not mad. He is running toward you.

Life Application
This week, identify one area where you have been pulling away from God out of shame, fear, or comfort. Maybe you stopped praying consistently. Maybe you have been avoiding a conversation with God about something you did. Maybe you have been sitting on the fence spiritually and calling it balance.
Choose to come back. Not when you feel ready. Now. Come to Him like a child, without pretense, without waiting to have it all together first.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
God is not waiting for you to get it all together. He is already running toward you. The only question is whether you will stop swimming back to the familiar and start pressing forward toward Him.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Where in my life have I been pulling away from God instead of running back to Him?
- Is there something I am holding onto that has become an idol, something I am not willing to let God refine out of me?
- Am I praying with genuine faith that God will come through, or am I praying with doubt and just hoping for the best?
- What would it look like for me to keep swimming toward God this week, even when it feels uncomfortable or lonely?
God is not waiting for you to get it all together. He is already running toward you. The only question is whether you will stop swimming back to the familiar and start pressing forward toward Him.
